Hello fellow fly fishers,
It's hard to ignore what is going on in Australia right now as they face a possible extinction level event for certain species as these bushfires continue burning. Sadly, they are just now reaching peak summer temperatures, so these fires will continue burn for several more months. As I was reading another article, I just got that feeling that I had to do something. Turns out, I was not alone.
On Instagram, Aussie Fly Fisher set up a fundraiser and the fly fishing community started coming together. I immediately started organizing an auction (more on that later), and other companies got into the action as well. Fly Fish Food started the hashtag #dozenfordownunder along with Josh Mills aka @millsfly who started the previous hashtag #dozenfordorian. The jist of it is, fly tyers tie up a dozen flies, use the hashtag, and it starts an auction on your IG post. Their fundraiser will go through Yellow Dog Community & Conservation Foundation, the group who raised funds for Dorian relief!
As for my auction, stay tuned to the @primeflycompany Instagram account for updates but in general, I will be organizing and accepting donations throughout January/early February for a late February auction. Everything will be through IG post and all funds will go to the Aussie Fly Fisher fundraiser. You can find more information or to donate money directly through the link below.
How You Can Make A Difference
There are several ways to get involved. First, you can donate flies to Prime Fly to be auctioned off.
You can also tie flies and participate in the #dozenfordownunder movement.
Third, you can support these auctions by bidding. It is all for a good cause and every dollar helps.
There are more tyers, companies, and organizations starting to combine forces, so please check on Instagram over the next few weeks. I know Veedavoo has decals available, Sightline Provisions donated special one off custom bracelets, Rep Your Water is planning a limited edition apparel release and Enrico Puglisi is going to be auctioning off some signed one-off flies.
